The smallest Mughal garden, built around a spring
Timings and fees change from time to time. Please confirm locally before you go.
Chashme Shahi, the royal spring, was laid out in the 1630s during the reign of Shah Jahan. It is the smallest of the Mughal gardens in Srinagar, set on a hillside above Dal Lake with three terraces, a small pavilion and water channels fed by a natural spring.
The spring is the reason for the garden. Many visitors fill a bottle from it, as the water is cold and locally believed to be good for health. The garden is compact, so a visit is short, but the terraces and old trees make it a pleasant stop.
Chashme Shahi is on the road up to Pari Mahal and is next to the Tulip Garden, so it fits easily into a morning of garden visits. It is near an area with official residences, so you may see security checks on the approach road. In autumn the chinar leaves around the garden turn red and gold, and the crowds are much smaller than in spring.
