Sand dunes, Bactrian camels and the Diskit Buddha
Nubra Valley lies north of Leh where the Shyok and Nubra rivers meet. The road crosses Khardung La and then drops into a wide, sandy valley at about 3,000 m, lower than Leh. The change in landscape is striking, with dunes, green villages and orchards set against bare mountains.
Diskit is the main village. Its old monastery sits on a ridge above the valley, and a large statue of Maitreya Buddha faces down the valley towards the Shyok river. A short drive away, Hunder has sand dunes where you can ride double-humped Bactrian camels, a breed that once carried goods on the old trade routes to Central Asia.
Most visitors stay one or two nights in Diskit or Hunder, where there are camps, guesthouses and homestays. From here you can go on to Turtuk, visit the hot springs at Panamik, or continue to Pangong Tso along the Shyok river road. Nubra is a good second stop after acclimatising in Leh.

No. Nubra is lower than Leh, at about 3,000 m, so days are warmer. Nights can still be cool, so carry a warm layer.
