About Jama Masjid, Srinagar
The Jama Masjid stands at Nowhatta in the old part of Srinagar, often called Downtown. It was first built at the end of the 14th century under Sultan Sikandar and has been rebuilt several times after fires. The present building is in the Indo-Saracenic style, with brick walls and pagoda-like wooden roofs typical of Kashmir.
Inside, the prayer halls are held up by hundreds of tall pillars, each made from a single deodar trunk. They surround a large square courtyard with a garden and a pool for ablutions. The mosque can hold thousands of people at Friday prayers.
A visit to the Jama Masjid is a good way to see the old city. The lanes around it have wooden houses, shops and bakeries. The Khanqah-e-Moula, a wooden shrine on the Jhelum river, is a short drive away and is often combined with it. Go with a local guide if you can, as the lanes are narrow and easy to get lost in.
