About Hazratbal Shrine
Hazratbal is a white marble mosque with a single dome and a minaret, on the north-western shore of Dal Lake. It is the most important Muslim shrine in Kashmir. It houses a relic believed to be a hair of the Prophet Muhammad, known as the Moi-e-Muqqadas, which is shown to the public on special religious occasions.
The shrine is open to visitors of all faiths outside prayer times. The building looks over a large open courtyard and the lake, and many people come in the evening to sit by the water. On Fridays and religious festivals the shrine is very crowded.
The road to Hazratbal passes through older lakeside neighbourhoods, and there are stalls near the shrine selling local snacks and religious items. It fits easily with a visit to Shalimar Bagh, which is on the opposite side of the lake. Kashmir University is close by, and the area is calm on weekdays.
