About Shalimar Bagh
Shalimar Bagh was built by Emperor Jahangir in the early 1600s for his wife, Nur Jahan. It lies at the north-eastern end of Dal Lake and is laid out in three main terraces, with a long central water channel lined with fountains and chinar trees.
The garden was planned as a royal retreat, with an outer public area and inner sections for the emperor and the women of the court. The top terrace has a pavilion of black stone, set in a pool with fountains around it. The design later influenced other Mughal gardens, including one of the same name in Lahore.
Compared with Nishat Bagh, Shalimar is flatter, more formal and a little quieter. It is set further back from the lake, so the views are of the garden itself rather than the water. Spring flowers and autumn chinar colours are the best seasons, though the garden is pleasant through the summer.
Things to do at Shalimar Bagh
- Walk the central water channel up to the black stone pavilion
- See the fountains and old chinar trees
- Combine with Nishat Bagh and Hazratbal on the same drive
