A riverside town and base for Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari
Pahalgam lies where two streams meet to form the Lidder river, in a green valley about 2,200 m high. The town has a small market, riverside walks and hotels spread along the road and the river. It is calmer than Srinagar and makes a good base for two nights.
Most sightseeing around Pahalgam is done in local union taxis, which run fixed routes to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari. Outside cars are generally not allowed on these routes. Pony rides are also popular, and the river is used for rafting in the warmer months.
Chandanwari, at the end of the road up the valley, is the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra in July and August. During the yatra the area is busy and there are extra security checks, so plan around those dates if you want a quiet visit. In winter, snow often reaches the town and some routes may close.
