About Mandvi
Mandvi is an old port town on the Gulf of Kutch, where the Rukmavati river meets the sea. For centuries it was the main port of Kutch, and its sailors and traders went as far as East Africa and the Gulf. Today it is a calm town with a long beach and a slower pace than Bhuj.
On the bank of the river, carpenters still build large wooden ships, or dhows, by hand using methods passed down in families. You can watch the work from close by and see hulls at different stages. A short drive out of town is the Vijay Vilas Palace, a 20th-century summer palace of the Kutch royal family, with domes, carved stonework and a rooftop view over the sea and gardens.
Mandvi beach is wide and usually clean, with camel and horse rides, food stalls and space to walk. The water is calm in winter. Kutchi dabeli, a spicy potato snack in a bun, is said to have started in Mandvi, and you will find it all over town.
