About Bhuj
Bhuj is the main town of Kutch and the usual base for exploring the district. It was the capital of the Jadeja rulers of Kutch for several centuries, and the old walled town still has their palaces, temples and narrow market lanes. Bhujiyo Dungar, the hill behind the town, gives Bhuj its name.
The town was badly damaged in the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, and much of it has been rebuilt since. The palace complex near the Darbargadh holds the Aina Mahal and the Prag Mahal, both open as museums. Hamirsar lake sits in the middle of the town and is a pleasant place for an evening walk. On Bhujiyo Dungar, Smritivan is a memorial and museum to the people who died in the earthquake.
Bhuj is also the best place to shop for Kutchi crafts. The markets sell embroidery, bandhani, Ajrakh prints, leatherwork and silver jewellery, and craft villages such as Bhujodi are a short drive away. Most trips to the White Rann, Mandvi and the northern villages start from here.
