About Prag Mahal

The Prag Mahal stands in the old palace complex of Bhuj, beside the Aina Mahal. It was built in the second half of the 19th century under Rao Pragmalji II and designed by the British architect Colonel Henry Saint Clair Wilkins. The style is Italian Gothic, built in local stone, and the result looks very different from the older palaces around it.

Inside is a large durbar hall with chandeliers, old furniture and hunting trophies from the royal collection. The carvings on the pillars and arches show plants and animals in detail. A narrow staircase leads up the clock tower, and from the top you get a view over the rooftops of Bhuj, Hamirsar lake and the hills around the town.

Like much of Bhuj, the palace was damaged in the 2001 earthquake, and parts of it still show signs of age and repair. Visit it together with the Aina Mahal; they share the same courtyard.

Things to do at Prag Mahal

  • Climb the clock tower for a view over Bhuj

Tips before you go

  • The clock tower stairs are steep and narrow. They are not suitable for small children or people with knee trouble.
  • Timings and the weekly closing day change. Confirm them locally before you go.
