About Smritivan Earthquake Memorial
Smritivan is a memorial to the people who lost their lives in the Gujarat earthquake of 26 January 2001, which caused great damage across Kutch. It is built on the slopes of Bhujiyo Dungar, the hill on the edge of Bhuj, and was opened in 2022.
The memorial park has paths across the hillside, with the names of the people who died written on plaques. Small check dams have been built along the slopes, and the hill has been planted with trees. From the higher points there is a wide view over Bhuj and the land around it.
The museum is the main reason to visit. Its galleries explain how earthquakes and other natural disasters happen, tell the story of the 2001 earthquake, and show how Kutch was rebuilt. There is an earthquake simulator that lets you feel what the tremor was like. It is moving and well presented, and it helps you understand the Bhuj you see today.
