About White Rann of Kutch
The White Rann is part of the Great Rann of Kutch, a seasonal salt marsh in the far north of the district. During the monsoon the area floods with seawater. As it dries out after the rains, a crust of salt is left behind, and by winter the ground turns white for as far as you can see.
Most visitors come to the stretch near Dhordo village, about 80 km north of Bhuj. A short road leads from the checkpost to a viewing area and watchtower, and from there you can walk out onto the salt. The light changes quickly at sunset, and on full-moon nights the whole surface glows a pale silver.
In the winter season the Gujarat government runs the Rann Utsav, with a large tent city near Dhordo, folk music, craft stalls and camel cart rides. Outside the festival the Rann is quieter and still worth visiting from roughly November to February. In the summer it is very hot, and in the monsoon parts of it are under water.
